5-10-15-20

So, I stole this from Pitchfork…

Welcome to 5-10-15-20, a new feature in Pitchfork News. In 5-10-15-20, we talk to artists about the music they loved at five-year interval points in their lives. Maybe we’ll get a detailed roadmap of how their tastes and passions helped make them who they are. Maybe we’ll just learn that they really liked hearing the “DuckTales” theme song over and over when they were kids. Either way, it’ll be fun.

I really liked the edition of this that Moby did.

Age 5:

Elvis Presley “Aloha From Hawaii via Satellite”

I was given a VHS copy of this by my grandfather, who I always thought looked a lot like Elvis. I’m pretty sure it was just the way he wore his hair. I loved it. I used to sit around with my grandfather and listen to tapes that he had made by dubbing songs off the radio in Eureka, California. He cataloged everything alphabetically on index cards and kept said cards in little cases so he could find particular songs and artists. Kind of amazing, right?

Age 10:

Nirvana “Nevermind”

Luckily for me when I was 10 I had a friend named Eric, who had an older brother named Glen, who essentially took away all of my music and made listen to Nirvana, Alice in Chains, Sonic Youth, etc. I was pretty into DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince at that point. Probably Vanilla Ice, as well. Glen, if you’re out there, I really can’t thank you enough.

Age 15:

Rage Against the Machine “Evil Empire”

I got this album shortly after my 15th birthday. Not only did I love the music itself but the insert photo of all sorts of books inspired my reading list for years to come. Some of the books were pretty cheesy (i.e. The Anarchist Cookbook, Rules For Radicals) but most were amazing to my 15-year-old brain (i.e. The Grapes of Wrath, Johnny Got His Gun, The Wretched of the Earth).

Age 20:

Federation X “American Folk Horror”

Dark, heavy and just all around nasty. Totally sounds like what the Inland Empire feels like, if that makes any sense. I never missed an opportunity to see these guys live. I actually followed them around the Northwest for a while on their “last tour.” Good times.

Age 25:

Clipse “Hell Hath No Fury”

I had been a fan of Clipse since I heard their first album but their second album was fucking amazing. It came out in late 2006 but I had illegally downloaded a leaked copy off the internet a while before. I absolutely did not stop listening to this album for about 6 months.
